The resource includes:

  • Teacher guidance and a six-stage critique overview
  • Visual vocabulary and accessible sentence stems
  • A fully worked critique of Vincent van Gogh’s The Bedroom
  • Focused guidance on composition, colour, line, space, technique, mood and context

How to Use the Artwork Critique Pack

Begin with silent looking before giving students contextual information. Work through the stages in order, returning to visible evidence whenever a claim is made. The pack can support whole-class modelling, paired discussion, independent writing, sketchbook annotation or a focused intervention.

  • Display the artwork and allow one minute of quiet observation.
  • Separate factual description from analysis, interpretation and judgement.
  • Model the claim–evidence–effect structure with one precise visual detail.
  • Use the focused pages to analyse composition, colour, space, surface and technique.
  • Compare possible interpretations and ask students to justify each one visually.
  • Finish with a balanced conclusion and one connection to the student’s own practical work.

Suitable for GCSE and A Level Art & Design

The resource supports Fine Art, Photography and Graphic Communication. GCSE students can use the vocabulary lists and sentence stems to build confidence, while A Level students can compare interpretations, integrate relevant context and develop a more independent critical voice.
