Welcome to BTEC Art and Design

BTEC Art and Design is practical and project-based. It allows you to investigate creative work, explore materials and techniques, develop ideas and produce outcomes for a purpose, audience or brief.

Unlike GCSE and A Level Art, BTEC qualifications are not assessed through AO1–AO4. Instead, you complete components or projects with clearly defined assessment criteria.

Portfolio to A Star translates this assessment language into manageable steps so that you understand what evidence to include, how to strengthen it and what to do next.

Frequently asked questions

Is BTEC Level 1/2 Art and Design equivalent to GCSE Art?

The BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Tech Award is designed to be comparable in size and rigour to a GCSE. However, its assessment structure, terminology and grading system are different.

Does BTEC Art and Design use AO1, AO2, AO3 and AO4?

No. AO1–AO4 belong to GCSE and A Level Art and Design qualifications. BTEC students are assessed through component marking criteria and must provide the evidence required by their particular task or brief.

There is no traditional written examination. Component 2 is an externally set and externally marked practical task completed during supervised assessment sessions.

Not necessarily. BTEC may suit students who enjoy practical projects and responding to briefs, but success still requires research, creative development, experimentation, organisation, reflection and a resolved response.

What grades are available for the Level 1/2 Tech Award?

The available qualification grades are Level 1 Pass, Merit and Distinction, followed by Level 2 Pass, Merit, Distinction and Distinction*. Marks from both components contribute to the final qualification grade.

Can I study Fine Art, Photography or Graphic Communication?

The qualification supports a range of Art and Design practices. The particular disciplines, materials and opportunities available will depend on the programme offered by your school or college and the requirements of the assessment brief.

Can Portfolio to A Star complete or mark my assessed work?

No. Your assessed evidence must remain your own work and must follow the supervision and authentication requirements set by Pearson and your centre. Portfolio to A Star provides general educational guidance to help you understand creative processes and develop your skills.
