Help Students Annotate Art and Design Work Effectively

How to Annotate Art and Design Work Effectively is a free classroom presentation designed to help GCSE and A Level students write shorter, clearer and more useful annotations. It shows students how to explain what they noticed, why they made a choice and what they will do next.

What is Included?

This presentation gives teachers a concise, visual way to model useful annotation. The slides keep wording deliberately brief and show students how to record observations, explain creative choices, evaluate experiments and identify practical next steps.

The resource includes:

  • The purpose of annotation in an Art and Design sketchbook
  • A simple Notice → Explain → Decide structure
  • WHAT? WHY? NEXT? prompts for short, useful responses
  • Visual vocabulary for describing materials and formal elements
  • Evaluation prompts for experiments and practical next steps
  • Links between annotation, creative development and AO1–AO4

How to Use the Annotation Presentation

Use the presentation with a real piece of student work whenever possible. Pause after each prompt and ask students to identify visible evidence before they write. The aim is not to produce long paragraphs; it is to record thinking and make the creative journey easier to follow.

  • Begin with one recent drawing, photograph, material test or design idea.
  • Ask students to state what they can actually see before making a judgement.
  • Encourage precise vocabulary instead of words such as “nice”, “good” or “bad”.
  • Use the sentence structure to connect choice, reason, visual effect and next step.
  • Keep annotations close to the relevant image, sample or experiment.
  • Finish by asking students to improve one existing sketchbook annotation.

Suitable for GCSE and A Level Art & Design

The presentation can support Fine Art, Photography and Graphic Communication students across different examination boards. GCSE students can use the prompts directly, while A Level students can extend their responses through more detailed comparison, interpretation and evaluation. The editable presentation can also be opened in Apple Keynote.
