Help Students Improve Sketchbook Presentation

Help Students Improve Sketchbook Presentation

Improving Sketchbook Presentation is a free visual classroom resource that helps GCSE and A Level students organise pages more clearly. The presentation focuses on visual hierarchy, spacing, sequence and consistency while reminding students that presentation should support the work—not compete with it.

What is Included?

This presentation provides a practical framework for reviewing a sketchbook spread. Its examples are deliberately modelled at a believable student level and show how focus, spacing, hierarchy and sequence can make the creative journey easier to understand.

The resource includes:

  • Focus, order and space as three core presentation principles
  • WHAT? WHERE? NEXT? questions for planning each page
  • Visual hierarchy using big, medium and small elements
  • Grouping, breathing space and consistent edge alignment
  • Selective use of torn edges, stained paper and material samples
  • Links between clear presentation and AO1–AO4 evidence

How to Use the Sketchbook Presentation

Use the slides before students mount a new group of work or during a sketchbook review. Encourage students to move loose items around before attaching them, then check whether another viewer can identify the main focus and follow the development.

  • Choose one spread containing enough evidence to review meaningfully.
  • Identify the most important image, experiment or decision first.
  • Group related work and leave visible space between different ideas.
  • Use size and placement to establish a simple visual hierarchy.
  • Add short, readable annotations close to the relevant evidence.
  • Remove decoration that distracts from the artwork or repeats information.

Suitable for GCSE and A Level Art & Design

The presentation can support Fine Art, Photography and Graphic Communication students across different examination boards. It is particularly useful for GCSE students learning to organise their first substantial sketchbooks, while A Level students can apply the same principles to a more complex creative journey. The editable presentation can also be opened in Apple Keynote.
