What is Included?

This resource helps EAL learners understand and use important Art & Design vocabulary in meaningful classroom contexts. Teachers can introduce selected words alongside demonstrations, artworks and practical activities, while students can use the prompts during discussion, annotation and reflection.

The resource includes:

  • Accessible vocabulary for materials, techniques and visual elements
  • Words for discussing colour, tone, texture, shape and composition
  • Language prompts for describing processes and creative decisions
  • Visual cues to support understanding and classroom discussion
  • Adaptable support for annotation and artist research
  • Print-ready PDF and editable Word versions

How to Use the EAL Art Vocabulary Resource

Introduce vocabulary through practical examples, demonstrations and images rather than presenting words in isolation. Select a small group of relevant terms for each lesson and give students repeated opportunities to hear, say, read and apply them during meaningful Art & Design activities.

  • Introduce selected vocabulary alongside materials, tools and demonstrations.
  • Display key words with visual examples in the classroom.
  • Encourage students to rehearse language during paired and group discussions.
  • Use sentence prompts to support sketchbook annotation and artist research.
  • Allow students to add translations or familiar words where helpful.
  • Gradually reduce prompts as students use the vocabulary more independently.

Suitable for GCSE and A Level Art & Design

The resource can support Fine Art, Photography and Graphic Communication students across different examination boards. Teachers can adapt the editable Word version to match current projects, students’ levels of English and the vocabulary needed for particular practical processes.
