What is Included?

This resource helps students choose precise subject vocabulary when analysing artists’ work, evaluating experiments and explaining their own creative decisions. It can be used during annotation, artist research, group critique and project reviews.

The resource includes:

  • Vocabulary for analysing composition, colour, tone and texture
  • Terms for discussing materials, techniques and visual effects
  • Words for explaining mood, meaning, symbolism and context
  • Alternatives to vague comments such as “good” or “interesting”
  • Prompts for connecting vocabulary to evidence in the artwork
  • Print-ready PDF and editable Word versions

How to Use the Advanced Critical Vocabulary Resource

Introduce vocabulary in small, relevant groups rather than presenting every term at once. Select words connected to the artwork, technique or assessment objective currently being studied, then model how each term can be supported with specific visual evidence.

  • Display selected vocabulary during artist research and class critiques.
  • Ask students to replace vague words with more precise alternatives.
  • Encourage students to explain where they can see evidence in an artwork.
  • Use the vocabulary when comparing artists, experiments and outcomes.
  • Add relevant terms to sketchbook annotations and project evaluations.
  • Gradually encourage students to select appropriate vocabulary independently.

Suitable for GCSE and A Level Art & Design

The vocabulary can support Fine Art, Photography and Graphic Communication students across different examination boards. Teachers can adapt the editable Word version to suit particular projects, ability levels, access needs and subject specialisms.
