What is Included?

This practical 18-page pack provides meaningful cover work without requiring a specialist Art teacher to introduce each activity. Tasks can be completed on the sheet, in a sketchbook or on separate paper using ordinary classroom drawing materials.

The resource includes:

  • 12 independent activities designed for 45–60 minute lessons
  • Fine Art, Photography and Graphic Communication pathways
  • Original visual references suitable for colour or greyscale printing
  • Clear GCSE support and A Level extension prompts
  • AO1–AO4 teaching connections and short reflection questions
  • Differentiation planner, cover lesson record and teacher guidance
  • Editable Word document and matching print-ready PDF

How to Use the Art Cover Lesson Pack

Select the activity that best fits the class and print one copy per student. The worksheets keep instructions clear for a cover teacher while still requiring students to observe, make visual decisions, compare possibilities and reflect on what they have produced.

  • Choose calm observational tasks for classes that need a tightly focused starting point.
  • Use the Photography and Graphic Communication pathways with printed references if devices are unavailable.
  • Allow students to work directly on the sheet, in a sketchbook or on larger separate paper.
  • Use the GCSE support selectively rather than reducing the task for the whole class.
  • Ask A Level students to justify independent material, composition and development decisions.
  • Reconnect useful completed work to the student’s current project wherever possible.

Suitable for GCSE and A Level Art & Design

The activities cover observation, cropping, tone, positive and negative space, photography, contact-sheet selection, texture, mark-making, graphic symbols, packaging hierarchy, reflections and connected idea development. AO references are included as broad teaching connections rather than marks or grade predictions.
