Planning a Successful Final Outcome

Help Students Plan a Successful Final Outcome

Planning a Successful Final Outcome is a free classroom presentation for GCSE and A Level Art & Design. Visual examples and short prompts help students select their strongest ideas, test compositions and materials, and plan a purposeful final piece that grows from their research and experiments.

What is Included?

This 12-slide presentation guides students from initial intentions to a practical plan for their final outcome. Teachers can use it with a whole class or during individual portfolio reviews, pausing at each stage so students can apply the prompts to their own work.

The resource includes:

  • Short prompts for defining intentions and selecting the strongest ideas
  • Visual examples of composition planning and material tests
  • Guidance on adapting influences and refining a personal response
  • A practical making sequence and links to AO1–AO4
  • A focused planning activity and teacher presentation notes
  • Editable PowerPoint and Apple Keynote presentations

How to Use the Final Outcome Planning Presentation

Use the presentation when students have research and experiments to review, before they commit to a final piece. Ask them to keep their sketchbooks or portfolios open and use evidence from their own work to explain each decision. The aim is a clear, achievable plan, with room to test and refine.

  • Begin by asking students to explain their intention in one clear sentence.
  • Review existing research and experiments to identify the strongest ideas.
  • Compare thumbnail compositions, viewpoints and possible scales.
  • Test important colour, material or process decisions before committing.
  • Plan the making sequence, materials and time needed, including review points.
  • Finish with a clear intention, supporting evidence and the next test to complete.

Suitable for GCSE and A Level Art & Design

The presentation can support Fine Art, Photography and Graphic Communication students. Adapt the examples and prompts to suit the project, available materials and level of study. Encourage GCSE students to explain clear choices and A Level students to justify a more sustained, independent response.
