What is Included?

This 18-page pack introduces each principle with an original visual exemplar, then provides a focused GCSE task and a more independent A Level extension. It can support whole-class teaching, analysis, redesign, critique and project development.

The resource includes:

  • Teacher guidance and a seven-principle overview
  • An original visual exemplar for each principle
  • Separate GCSE tasks and A Level extensions
  • Identification, comparison and weak-layout redesign activities
  • Dedicated GCSE and A Level design challenges
  • Peer critique and reusable design-audit sheets
  • Editable Word document and matching print-ready PDF

How to Use the Seven-Principle Pack

Begin with the quick-reference page, then display one exemplar at a time and ask students to identify visible evidence. Choose the GCSE route for focused recognition and explanation, or the A Level route for comparison, judgement and independent development. Later activities show how several principles work together.

  • Introduce each definition and use its two noticing questions.
  • For GCSE, identify one principle, one piece of evidence and one effect.
  • For A Level, compare alternatives and judge choices against audience and purpose.
  • Use the deliberately weak layout as a diagnosis and redesign activity.
  • Complete the level-specific design challenge as a practical application.
  • Finish with peer critique and the reusable seven-principle design audit.

Suitable for GCSE and A Level Graphic Communication

The resource is designed specifically for Graphic Communication. GCSE students receive structured terminology, evidence prompts and a focused poster challenge. A Level students compare visual systems, consider audience and format, evaluate trade-offs and develop two connected outcomes. Teachers can adapt the pack for different examination boards without implying endorsement.
