What is Included?

This resource provides flexible questions that encourage students to look beyond their first response, justify creative decisions and consider alternative possibilities. Teachers can select questions for individual tutorials, class critiques, written reflection, extension activities and independent project development.

The resource includes:

  • Adaptable question banks connected to AO1, AO2, AO3 and AO4
  • Prompts for deeper artist research and contextual understanding
  • Questions that encourage experimentation and creative risk-taking
  • Critique prompts for explaining and evaluating creative decisions
  • Printable challenge cards for lessons, tutorials and independent work
  • Print-ready PDF and editable Word versions

How to Use the Stretch-and-Challenge Questions

Select questions that respond to the student’s current stage rather than presenting the entire bank at once. Use prompts to open up discussion and possibilities, giving students time to think, test ideas and arrive at their own decisions instead of treating each question as requiring one correct answer.

  • Select questions linked to the project stage or assessment objective.
  • Use individual prompts during tutorials and progress reviews.
  • Introduce challenge cards as lesson starters, extensions or reflection tasks.
  • Encourage students to support answers with visual and practical evidence.
  • Ask follow-up questions that explore alternatives and creative risks.
  • Allow students to select increasingly appropriate questions independently.

Suitable for GCSE and A Level Art & Design

The questions can support Fine Art, Photography and Graphic Communication students across different examination boards. Teachers can adapt the editable Word version to suit particular projects, student starting points, assessment objectives and levels of challenge.
