What is Included?

This resource provides practical support structures that can be adapted to the student’s current needs and reduced as confidence grows. Teachers can use the scaffolds during annotation, artist research, idea development, experimentation and refinement without turning them into permanent restrictions.

The resource includes:

  • Adaptable scaffolds for annotation and written reflection
  • Structures for artist research and contextual investigation
  • Prompts for generating, selecting and developing ideas
  • Support for recording experiments and evaluating outcomes
  • Practical fade-planning tools for reducing support gradually
  • Print-ready PDF and editable Word versions

How to Use Scaffolds That Can Gradually Be Removed

Select the smallest amount of support that enables the student to begin and make purposeful progress. Review the scaffold regularly, removing prompts, choices or structures in manageable stages as the student demonstrates greater confidence and independence.

  • Identify the specific barrier before selecting an appropriate scaffold.
  • Introduce the support clearly and explain its purpose to the student.
  • Use prompts for starting work without prescribing the final response.
  • Review whether each element of support is still necessary.
  • Remove or simplify one part of the scaffold at a time.
  • Encourage students to recognise when they can work without the support.

Suitable for GCSE and A Level Art & Design

The scaffolds can support Fine Art, Photography and Graphic Communication students across different examination boards. Teachers can adapt the editable Word version to suit particular projects, individual starting points and planned stages for developing independence.
